Jinwoo Hwon Lee 이훤 is a poet and a visual Artist. Lee focuses on senses of belonging and dislocation, specifically from one's mother language.
Recipient of the New Writer Award by <<Literature and Consciousness>> Magazine (2014) and the Excellent Book of the Year Award by ARKO (2019), Lee’s works have been exhibited in the United States, South Korea, China, Brazil and Scotland. Lee’s photographic body of work, <Tell Them I SaidHello>, was exhibited on the Aviary Gallery and Life Framer Gallery; <We Meet in the Past Tense> series in the Broad Magazine Gallery; and <집은 어디에나 있고 자주 아무 데도 없다Home is Everywhere Often Nowhere> in the Knower아는사람 Gallery.
Curator Mary Stanley selected Lee as one of the emerging photographers to watch for and curated his work in the exhibition: <<On the Verge>>. Other notable curatorial exhibitions include<<PORTFOLIO2020>> curated by the Photography Curator of High Museum of Arts, Sarah Kennel; 《PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANY MEANS》 curated by the Executive Director and Curator of Colorado Photographic Center of Arts, Samantha Johnson and Curator of PACE Center Gallery, Rose Frederick; <<STREET LIFE>> by a Photographer in Magnum Photo Agency, Bruce Gilden; <<AIRPORT SHOW 2020>> at the International Airport of Atlanta by the director of Atlanta CelebratesPhotography, Amy Miller.
His photographs have been commissioned to be covers/feature of multiple magazines, books, posters and other publications. Three images from Lee’s <Human Textures> series are in the collection of the Infinite Art Museum and an image from <Tell Them I Said Hello> is in the collection of Life Framer Gallery. He is currently commissioned to publish an alternating photo-poem and photo-essay series by the PAPER Magazine. Since debuting as a writer in 2014, Lee has published two poetry books and a photo essay book in Korea as well as partaking in seven anthologies.
이훤은 사진가이자 시인이다. 텍스트와 사진으로 이야기를 만들며 주로 소외-분리-고립 사이에서 일어나는 감정에 주목한다. 미국에 거주하지만 책과 잡지, 문예지 등의 지면을 통해 한국에서도 활발히 활동 중이다. 두 권의 시집과 한 권의 사진산문집을 쓰고 찍었으며 네 권의 책(공저)에 참여하기도 했다.
스코틀랜드, 중국, 한국 그리고 미국에서 크고 작은 열다섯 차례의 전시를 가지며 사진가로서도 활동을 이어가고 있다. Life Framer 갤러리에서는 그의 작업 <Tell Them I Said Hello 나의 안부를 전해주세요> 시리즈를 콜렉션에 소장하기도 했다. 이 작업은 여러 잡지와 책 등을 통해 뷰어들과 공유되었고, High Museum의 사진 큐레이터 Sarah Kennel이 큐레이팅한 <<PORTFOLIO 2020>>에서 전시되었다. 동일 시리즈의 이미지 한 점은 Magnum Photography Ageny의 사진가 Bruce Gilder이 큐레이팅한 전시에서 전시되기도 했다. Infinite Art Museum은 <Human Textures사람의 질감> 시리즈의 세 편의 작품을 전시 및 소장했다. 동일한 시리즈는 허수경 시인의 산문집 출간과 함께 세상에 나온 분리형 포토-진으로 출간되기도 했다. 큐레이터 Mary Stanley는 이훤을 주목해야 할 젊은 사진가 중 한 명으로 선정하고 전시 <<On the Verge>>에서 그의 작업을 큐레이팅했다.
이훤은 2014년 <<문학과 의식>>에 <꼬릴 먹는 꼬리>외 네 편의 시를 발표하며 신인상을 수상, 작품 활동을 시작했다. 다섯 해가 지난 후, 그의 두 번째 시집 『우리 너무 절박해지지 말아요』(ISBN : 9791158964009)는 한국문화예술협회에서 선정한 2019년 상반기 우수도서로 선정되었다. 이 시집에는 텍스트형의 시뿐 아니라 이미지의 형태로 삽입되거나 이미지와 텍스트가 함께 배치된 시들이 수록돼 있다. 작가는 이 같은 접근을 "Poem-ography"라 명명하고 확장해나가고 있다. 2019년에 출간된 그의 사진산문집, 『당신의 정면과 나의 정면이 반대로 움직일 때』(ISBN: 9788965707998) 또한 이 같은 고민에서 시작된 책이다. 사물의 입장에서 바라본 시선들이 120여 장의 사진과 산문으로 나열돼 있다.
그는 계속해서 텍스트와 사진 각각의 개별성 그리고 관계성에 주목하며 작업을 이어나가고 있다. 잡지와 문예지, 책의 형태로 그의 작업을 만나볼 수 있으며, 현재는 <<페이퍼>> 매거진에서 <이훤의 사진으로 쓴 시>와 <이훤의 울지 않고 쓰는 작업일지>를 번갈아가며 연재 중이다.
