Tell Them I Said Hello portrays the identity issues among immigrants. Jinwoo Hwon Lee 이훤 shares his experience in form of poetic images. Lee writes,
“I was 19, when I came back by myself to America since being a toddler.
I did not speak what everyone spoke. I knew no one. People in the small town noticed me by my color. Koreans born and raised in America thought I was too ‘South Korean’. People back home thought I was too ‘American’. I was neither one of us nor one of them.
The eclectic black and white photographs in the series reflect the never resolved physical and emotional distance between two homes. The images hardly show a full face of a person. This signifies the scattered and undermined identity as a liminal. Oscillating between a citizen and an immigrant, I never felt fully understood or wholeheartedly considered. Some nuances were always dismissed.
In a greater context, the seemingly disjointed objects and people photographed in the series portray the alienated under different settings. The loose strings among the images are metaphors of many individuals’ first hand testimonies. Sharing the personal confession, I am hoping to invite you to imagine your own version of alienation.”

사진으로 담기 시작한 건 3년이 조금 안 되었지만, 이 시리즈가 시작된 것은 열다섯 해 전일 것이다. 열아홉에 처음 미국으로 이민을 왔다. 그리고 열다섯 해가 지났다. 언어를 배우고 문화적인 맥락을 채우는 일은 꽤 오랜 시간이 걸렸고 어떤 부분에서는 여태 진행 중이지만, 전반적으로 이제는 적응을 마쳤다고 느끼는 시점이 있었다. 내가 거의 미국인이 되었다고 느낄 만큼. 그후로 잘 지낸다고 한참 동안 잘 지내고 있다고 느꼈다. 서른 하나가 될 즈음이었나. 깨닫지 못한 감정들이 있었다는 걸 알게 되었다. 찬찬하고 꾸준했던 고립감. 작고 가끔은 사소해서 그때그때 넘기고 말았던 뉘앙스들로 누적되는 크고 작은 소외감. 고립감과 거리감. 가까운 품들과 내가 떨어져 있다는 반복적인 절망감이 있었다. 인지조차 못하고 지나는 감정들이 있었구나, 한다. 이민자로서 느끼는 고립감은, 언어와 정서의 부재-감은 모국으로 돌아가지 못하는, 집을 놓치는 경험에 놓일 때만 온전히 이해될 수 있는 상태 같다. 미묘한 낯빛이나 몸의 망설임 같은 것들이 누적되며 만들어지는 층층의 마음이 빚는 그 무엇. 언성 높이는 차별만 우릴 외롭게 하는 건 아니다.
이들 중 하나가 아니라는 자각은 지속됐고. 팽창했다. 무엇을 할 수 있을까. 쓰고 찍는 일 밖에 내가 할 수 있는 일이 없었다.
나는 이민자로서 지나온 표정을 시로 기록하기 시작했다. 그렇게 2018년, 시집 <<우리 너무 절박해지지 말아요>>에 낯빛들은 텍스트로 먼저 발화되었고, 후에 시리즈의 스무 여점의 이미지로 몸을 옮겨갔다. 문자 언어(Written language)에서 시각 언어(visual language)로 이동한 것이라기 보다 동시에 발생한 감정들이 성격이 조금 다른 자아로 발현되었던 건 아닐까 하는 생각을 한다.
이곳에도 저곳에도 속하지 못 하는 경계인이 되었다고 생각한 나는, 흩어져 있는 정체를 줄곧 보았다. 하나의 정체이지만 멀찍이 자리해있는 한 사람을. 해서, 다 다른 공간에서 찍힌 스무여 점의 이미지를 한 시리즈의 몸으로 담았다. 한 사람 안에 존재하는 광경들이 그리 존재할 수도 있다고. 시리즈를 통해 말하고 싶었다. 이민자로서의 정체는 그러나 계속해서 진행되고 있고, 해서 컬러로도 작업을 이어가고 있다. 계속해서 변모하는 정체감에 대해 이야기하고 싶다.
이 시리즈는 여러 공동전을 통해 전시되었고, Life Framer Collection이 소장하고 있다.
